Caspar David Friedrich
1774-1840 Caspar David Friedrich Locations German painter, studied art at Copenhagen, and in 1798 settled in Dresden. Friedrich painted chiefly landscapes and seascapes, with and without figures, architectural pictures, including a few of Dresden, and some religious subjects. Religious feeling and symbolism permeate his œuvre, of which the seascape with figures, Die Lebensstufen, is a characteristic example. He possessed considerable power to convey mood in landscape. Almost forgotten in the 19th c. and early 20th c., interest in his work increased considerably in the mid-20th c. He is hardly represented in Britain, but an exhibition of 112 of his pictures at the Tate Gallery in 1972 attracted much attention. F. G. Kersting was a friend of Friedrich. Franz Roubaudwas a Russian painter who created some of the largest and best known panoramic paintings.
Roubaud was born on 15 June 1856 in Odessa and attended an art school there. In 1877 he went to Munich, where he studied at the Munich Academy. He then settled in Saint Petersburg, working in the Imperial Academy of Arts and painting huge panorams of historical battles - Storm of Achulgo (1896, Tiflis, now under the restoration in the museun of graphic arts in Makhachkala), Siege of Sevastopol (1854) (unveiled in 1905, damaged during the Siege of Sevastopol (1942), restored in the 1950s), Battle of Borodino (1911, moved to Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow in 1962) and the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813). His works were so large that they had to be exhibited in pavilions specially built for that purpose. In 1913, Roubaud left Russia for Munich, where he died on 13 March 1928.
elias martin, gustavElias Martin, döpt 8 mars 1739 i Stockholm, död 25 januari 1818, svensk målare som vann internationell berömmelse under sin livstid för sina landskapsmålningar, porträtt och genremålningar, och var "associate member" av Royal Academy.
Elias Martin var son till åldermannen i snickarämbetet Olof Martin och Ulrika Haupt, syster till Georg Haupt. Han fick sin första utbildning hos fadern och visade sådan talang att han sändes till ämbetsmålaren F.C. Schultz. Genom denne fick han anställning hos Fredrik Henrik af Chapman som arkitekturritare och teckningslärare för officerarna i Sveaborg. Där fick han ledning av fältmarskalken Augustin Ehrensvärd, och umgick med och undervisade dennes son Carl August Ehrensvärd.
